Protecting and Funding Britain’s Waterways

I am writing as a constituent to ask for your support for Britain’s inland waterways and for a review of government funding for the network.

As MP for [Constituency], you represent an area connected to [local canal / river / restoration project]. These waterways are far more than historic features. They support leisure boating, walking, cycling, angling, wildlife, local businesses, tourism, heritage, wellbeing and access to green and blue space.

Across the country, waterways are under growing pressure from ageing infrastructure, rising maintenance costs, inflation and the increasing impact of extreme weather. Without sufficient long-term funding, the condition of canals and rivers will continue to deteriorate, putting at risk the many public benefits they provide.

The Canal & River Trust manages around 2,000 miles of waterways, but government support is due to reduce further from 2027 onwards. At the same time, waterways are expected to deliver economic, environmental and social benefits far beyond the level of public investment they receive.

Fund Britain’s Waterways is a coalition campaign bringing together organisations and supporters from across the inland waterways sector. The campaign is calling on government to recognise the national value of canals and rivers and to provide the funding needed to protect them for the future.

I would be grateful if you would:

• raise the issue of waterways funding with the relevant minister and department
• support a review of current and future funding for Britain’s inland waterways
• recognise the importance of waterways to local communities, heritage, nature, tourism and wellbeing
